Explore Burgas – Landmarks, Culture & Coastal Beauty
St. Anastasia Island
St. Anastasia Island is one of the most romantic places on our Black Sea coast. The island is shrouded in mystery and hundreds of legends and stories are told about it. The island used to be a monastery, and for some time it served as a prison. It is made of volcanic rocks and its area is nearly 9 acres. It is located 6 km from the coast. Those thirsty for sea and island adventures can feel the excitement of a boat trip, light a candle in the church “Assumption of the Virgin Mary”, take a selfie of Burgas from the terrace of the cafe, eat soup with 5 kinds of fish and spices from the island under the fig tree of the restaurant “100 years ago”. For those visitors who wish to enjoy the island romance for more than a day, the opportunity to stay overnight on the island is provided. The guest rooms offer unparalleled views of the magical beauty of Burgas Bay, with the overall interior designed to uniquely recreate the atmosphere and spirit of the past.
Aquae Calidae historical site
Aquae Calidae is an ancient town on the territory of Burgas, known for millennia for its mineral springs. The first Roman bath in Aquae Calidae was built in the 2nd century, at the time of Emperor Trajan. The warm mineral springs have attracted many great rulers, including the Byzantine emperors Justinian I and Constantine IV Pogonat, the Bulgarian Khan Tervel and Sultan Suleiman II the Magnificent, who in the 16th century built an extremely modern for his time hamam (Turkish bath). In recent years archaeological excavations in the area of Aquae Calidae have uncovered the fortress wall and the northern entrance to the ancient city. The rich collection of finds from antiquity and the Middle Ages includes seals from the 10th-XII centuries, gold jewellery, thousands of gold, silver and bronze coins. Today the site, which has gathered thousands of years of history, is a tourist complex. Part of itis the restored bath of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, turned into a modern museum. A 3D projection takes tourists on a virtual walk from the time of the Thracians and the legend of the Holy Spring of the Three Healing Nymphs, through the Roman era – to the time of Suleyman the Magnificent. The Aquae Calidae Tourist Complex also has a café, a souvenir shop, an outdoor children’s playground, park space and an outdoor stage.
The cultural and tourist complex „Chengene skele“
The cultural and tourist complex “Chengene skele” is located right next to the fishing village of the same name and 15 km from Burgas. Its main mission is to promote the fishing craft and traditions. The complex has exhibition houses that tell the story of the fishermen. Visitors can see anchors, paddles, nets, small fishing tackle and more, and guests can also watch demonstrations of the fishing craft such as net making. The complex also includes a sailor’s café, restaurant, multi-purpose exhibition and event hall, park space and children’s playground. The new marina can also be reached by boat.
